The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team lost to Georgetown Gateway 59-42 Jan. 20 the heels of losing to Lago Vista 58-47 Jan. 17.
During the Jan. 20 contest, the Gators led 12-7 after the first quarter. The Mustangs finally tied the game at 19-19 with 1 minute and 48 seconds left in the half but were held scoreless the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Gateway scored five points, none bigger than a 3-pointer with eight seconds left, for a 24-19 half-time lead.
The Gators began the third period on an 8-2 run for a 32-21 advantage. Marble Falls’ final points of the quarter came on a steal and assist by junior guard Davis Dreisbach to junior guard Kody Smith, who completed the 3-point play to trim the deficit to 36-29. But Gateway scored the final bucket of the period for a 38-29 advantage headed into the final stanza.
Gateway outscored Marble Falls 21-13 in the fourth period for the victory.
The Gators’ natural height and long arms made it difficult for the Mustangs, especially in the lane.
“On the surface of it, they did a good job of outrebounding us and limiting us, and they crashed more than we would’ve liked,” Mustangs head coach Travis Crain said. “They took advantage of tips, and they were longer than us. They used that to their advantage. That’s a playoff team, and they played without two of their guys, who make them stronger. It’s also a good test for us to see where we are.”
Smith led the Mustangs in scoring with 14 points followed by sophomore guard Tidus Willie with 10. Marble Falls was 14 for 28 from the free throw line.
The loss to Lago Vista didn’t start that way. The Mustangs had a two-point lead after the first quarter and at halftime only to have the Vikings take a two-point into the final quarter.
Marble Falls had a five-point lead with five minutes left.
“It was back and forth and back and forth, and they just pulled away,” Crain said.
Marble Falls will face Burnet Tuesday, Jan. 24, at The Doghouse in a doubleheader. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m., the freshmen at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity at 8 p.m.
